Athy, situated in the south of Co. Kildare, is a market town on the convergence of the River Barrow and Grand Canal. The town is named after a second century chieftain, Ae, who was killed on the river crossing thus giving the town its name the ford of AE or in Irish Baile Átha Í. Athy Co-op Foundry is located in an area steeped in iron foundry tradition dating back to the early 20th century. In Athy itself the old IVI foundry gave employment to the area for decades under various owners until its eventual close in the early eighties leaving a lot of skilled foundry men unemployed. The demand for cast-iron products was still high at the time and a small foundry called Athy Foundry was set up, taking on some of the very skilled and experienced foundry men of the area. Creating a firm with the knowledge to take on and complete any job no matter how complicated. In 1986 Athy foundry was taken over by its present management and became Athy Co-op Foundry. Since then the company has grown in strength and experience, expanding its product range from items in cast-iron to alluminum, bronze and brass. Catering for a wide range of markets from the artistic to the industrial. With our in-house pattern making facilities the ability to reproduce castings from drawings or worn samples is an advantage. This can be seen from some of the projects worked on, one-off jobs and the restoration of historical buildings and machinery are a speciality.

Adamstown Engineering Ltd is a family run operation that has been in the foundry business for over 45 years.
We are highly experienced in producing castings. We have flexible manufacturing processes in which we can produce small or large runs. We can provide a level of expertise in Sand Casting and Die Casting.
Our family run business is large enough to service any requirement
But we are small enough to care.
Metal Casting Process Adamstown Engineering use 2 methods for manufacturing aluminum Castings, Sand casting and Gravity Die casting. Sand Casting is the more traditional method for casting aluminum We use 2 types Greensand and Airset sand casting. Greensand Casting is the oldest and least expensive . Greensand is known principally because of the moisture content within the sand. Clay and chemical additives are added to the sand to act as binders which results in a compound that is suitable for the sand moulding process.
The sand mixture is compressed around the pattern taking on the shape of the casting. Sand cores are used to form passageways in the casting. The two halves of the mould are closed and aluminum is poured into the cavity and left to solidify. After Solidification has taken place the sand is vibrated until it is released from the casting. The green sand casting process is suitable for small to medium size batches. The initial tooling costs are generally low and involve the production of usually a wooden pattern. Airset Casting process is used for extremely large Castings. It produces a sand mould of considerable strength which can be free standing without the need for moulding boxes and therefore unlimited in size. The process involves mixing sand, resin and a chemical hardener together. The sand mixture is then compressed around the pattern and left to set.

Established in 1990.
Many years ago when I was first working in clay and wax as a sculptor, the time came to have some of my work cast in bronze. I found the cost of this was very expensive. I decided to set up my own bronze casting facility. Around 1990 I started Kilmainham Art Foundry Ltd. and began to do work for other sculptors, to make it possible to fund my own bronze sculpture. Looking back, it can be seen there are a lot of good pieces done, but I like to think that the best is yet to come and that is the hope, expectation, and the attraction of Art, that something of extraordinary beauty can be brought into existence.
This is my understanding of art and the challenge of bringing sculpture into existence. For me, creating art is a reach in the direction of the absolute.
The test for anything is “does it work?” Beauty and form for its own sake are fine but for a sculpture to work it must carry a message. Also, the finished piece belongs to anyone who receives this message. If it is not understood or is confusing, it will be rejected or ignored. To be successful it must communicate an idea.
Effective modelling with wax or clay is about connecting an aesthetic form and complementary concept simultaneously.
The soul is who you are rather than something you have. It is the creator and energy production unit for mind and body. Spontaneous creativity has its source here and the less we allow our minds to intrude in this phenomenon the more effective we become. Art is cause
